General Education Expenditures for Instruction and Instructional Support Per Pupil:
Summary Paragraph:
While the Providence School District receives a large amount of income reaching upwards of $120 million, the revenue is spread thin as it gets distributed to fund the 24,494 children and 1,699 teachers in the district. It can be seen in the above photograph that funding per student tops out at $6,248. This number differs greatly from the $17,956 allocated to the schools located in New Shoreham, but is not far from the least funded district (based on per student funding) in Rhode Island, Woonsocket, at $5,139. 34% of the funding for this district is from local revenue, which is much less than the 90% Barrington receives from the local community. This means that the citizens of urban Providence either don't have the money to support the students, don't pay as much taxes, or spend their money elsewhere. The following photograph exhibits per student funding in the school district of Barrington for purposes of contrasting the two districts:
Barrington receives a similar amount of funding per student at $6,954.
I have updated this information to include a better look at per student funding as well as a brief comparison with Barrington. As the project continues correlations between funding and performance should begin to appear, and this information is only the groundwork. I used Information Works General Education Expeditures Chart as well as the Information Works Sources of Revenue Chart as my primary sources of information. If anything needs to be clarified or further explained let me know via a comment or email: jsnallard@gmail.com. Thanks - JayAllard
